Artist Chase Langford is a dear friend of mine. So, while a bit off topic for this blog, I want to use this forum to share his work (view more at www.chaselangford.com) and to promote (oh ya, here's the marketing tie-in) a solo exhibit of his amazing paintings.
If you are going to be in LA during September or early October, I encourage you to go view his work at Keller & Greene. Or, visit his website to check out his work and contact him direct.
His work is best viewed in person.
Solo Exhibition of new paintings
Chase Langford: Scrapes
at Keller & Greene Contemporary Fine Art
September 9th to October 15th, 2005

"We are pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new works by the Los Angeles-based, abstract painter, Chase Langford. Known for his inquiries into the topographic landscape and his breathtaking, nature-inspired color palettes, Langford stakes out new territory in "Scrapes," offering fresh revelations on his central themes.
Abandoning the traditional sable brush for a large wooden block used to drag the paint across the canvas, Langford relinquishes a more rigid control over the medium for a carefully-executed dance with serendipity. This process is rooted in the movement of the whole body rather than isolated in the hand. He pushes the paint like an earthmover, digging and scratching into the surface, revealing deep layers and shocks of vibrant color, uncovering the visual surprises for which he laid the groundwork. The result is a fascinating myriad of textures ranging from waxy smooth to rough and encrusted.
Although the paintings are clearly abstract, the colors build a bridge to the physical world whether they are calling forth a misty day on the sea or a golden field of grasses speckled by magenta wildflowers in the late afternoon sun. The "Scrapes" hint at a history of many permutations of colors and composition, a history of perpetual change. Each surface evokes a sense of time passed, of the slow and inevitable erosion by the elements. Yet, there is no melancholy or nostalgia present. Rather, we find a record of the moment when nature, the artist's eye, and chance converged on a point of radical beauty." ---Nicole Piar, Keller & Greene
