Philips Uses A Transvestite To Show Off The Power Of Its Women's Epilator

The ad scheduled to appear across Western Europe will feature a Los Angeles-based transvestite dancer, Karis.

The TV, print, online and outdoor campaign is for Philips' Satinelle Ice Epilator for women.

Neil Dawson, DDB’s global director for the product's manufacturer Philips, said: “We wanted to find the ultimate test for this device.

Aside from the obvious promotional exploitation of using a transvestite to make a point abut the quality of a epilator, I think they did a fine job in representing a politically sensitive topic. I wonder if this ad would be accepted in the States?

“It occurred to us that a man, or more specifically a transvestite, would be the ultimate test, given the combination of low pain threshold and desire for beautiful legs.”
