Abercrombie & Fitch Guerilla Marketing? Obama's Got The Abercrombie Boys

Picture_420While watching CNN last night--jumping back and forth between election results and American Idol--I spotted what might be a masterful job at guerilla marketing product placement.

In the photo and video below, three young guys are standing behind Barack Obama as he gave his speech following the Pennsylvania primary election. Note all three are wearing Abercrombie & Fitch t-shirts which read very strongly as background to Senator Obama.

I say the folks at A&F traveled over from Ohio and made a masterful guerilla marketing move. The folks at Defamer say that could be true, but they have other theories as well:

This mystery is bugging me: Why were the three young guys behind Barack Obama during his concession speech tonight all wearing Abercrombie & Fitch t-shirts? Maybe it's a plot by the Obama campaign to win back the gay community, which has something of a taste for the youth clothing retailer and, especially, its catalogs, but whose vote is basically owned by Hillary Clinton. But gays aren't really a swing vote in the upcoming Indiana or North Carolina primaries, nor in the Democratic party's upcoming battle against Republican nominee John McCain. Perhaps, instead, this is some kind of bizarre attempt at product placement by Abercrombie, trying to latch on to some of Obama's rock-
star appeal.

The t-shirts were distracting and it seemed odd to see a giant "Fitch"....at first I assumed it was some local Indiana candidate until I noticed the other two guys. Still a great speech and best leader we've seen in many years....
