New York Bans The N Word, whether you end it with an "a" or an "er"

ManhattanskylineIn New York, a state legistlator is floating the idea of banning iPods in city crosswalks. Now, a New York City council committee has approved a symbolic ban of the racial slur known as the N-word, putting New York in the middle of a national debate over whether the term has evolved into acceptable slang.

From New York's Newsday:

"I'm hoping this is the beginning of a move forward to a place where the use of the N-word is simply unacceptable," said Councilman Leroy Comrie (D-Queens), the chief sponsor of the resolution. "So many people have been quietly seething about this for a long time. It's time to bring it into the open."

The ban, which does not carry the weight of law, is among several passed by lawmakers across the country who say they are disturbed by the casual use of the epithet, and those who argue that its prevalence in music and movies, particularly when spelled with an "a" ending rather than an "er," has softened its meaning.
